Why do I have extremely painful shin splints/ pain in lower legs when running?

I started running last week doing about 10 miles in 2 to 3 hours while walking/running at times. I'm doing this to loose about 12 to 15 lbs in 8 weeks if I do this 4 to 5 times a week. Before then I have done cardio on the eliptical.

When I started last week my legs hurt but it was normal pain of over use because my legs weren't use to it but after taking a break for 3 days the first mile I did today running my shins and parts of my lower legs were so tight when I felt it and it was burning painful. I had to stop and stretch it out and take a break it hurt so bad. I almost turned around after 2 miles. I have never felt this.

My feet also became numb. Is it because they aren't use to running? However after passing the 5 mile mark with a little bit of walking they got better. Why is that?

  1. i always get this you sprained your ankel not kidding  see a doctor!

  2. You need to get a good non impact warm up before you run.  A bike, stationary bike, or ellipsoidal machine are all good.  Do about 10 minutes.  This will cause the pain to start fading.  While you still have pain after running use a contrast bath, soak your legs in ice water up to the knee for 1 minute, then in warm water for 1 minute.  Repeat 5-10 times.  You could also try running on a softer surface like trails instead of pavement.

  3. If you just started a running program and can do 10 miles, that's crazy.  Take it slower.  That's why you're in pain.  Doing too much too quick.  Give your body a chance to rest.  After your run take aspirin (or tylenol arthritis if you can't take aspirin) and ice your legs.  Try to ice every 4-6 hours to keep inflammation down.

  4. I remember having similar pains when I first started running last year. I started 2 miles non-stop, then gradually went up in milage. I could only run everyother day in the begining because the days inbetween left me feeling almost immobile and numb, in the good way. My calves were especially hurting and my heels would send sharp pains throughout. I pretty much walked like an old man or maybe even aGeisha like with my short delicate steps.

I can run atleast 5 miles everyday without a problem now. I guess your body is getting used to your new habit. I'm unsure if you'll lose the weight you're wishing though. Running had the opposite effect with me. I started gaining some lower body weight.

  5. Dont run for a few days so you can allow it to heal and wont add to the damage.

When you being to run again - make sure you have properly fitted footwear with good ankle support. Start running on even surfaces which are soft for flexibility. Always start with a good amount of stretching and build up speed as you go along running.

if it hurts a lot then get one of those stretchy bandages which people use for like knee support and pull it up over that area, folding it so it feels a bit tight. You could also try deep muscle rubs to keep the pain at bay.
