Question:

Why do I hear overtones when I play the 5th note in a flute?

I am trying to play a bansuri (a bamboo flute with 6 holes). I can play the notes Do Re Mi Fa fine, but when I get to the 4th hole or Sol, I cannot get it without blowing a little sharper. Even then, I get notes from the lower octave mixed with it. How do I change this technique? Also, how do I make finger movements steady when I'm moving from Fa to Sol?

  1. Hi Parry

Practice makes perfect. Practice what you are weak on , not on what you are strong in. You have Sol issues, practice the fingering until it flows just as east as the other notes.

The sharpness is probably a tuning problem. This can be fixed but it demands a professional to tune it with the proper tools and proper filing method.
