Why do I indulge on other people's accidents & failures excluding my family?

Is this normal? I enjoy hearing that my friend is having financial problem or had auto accidents. On the outside, I show grief on behalf of him/her, but inside, I am laughing. I feel this more intensely toward people who are better than me to begin with. Basically I want you to fail if you are not my family. Am I a bad person?

  1. Do you also feel jealously when you hear of a friend's triumphs?  That probably has a lot to do with some sort of inner problem or feeling of short-coming.  Misery loves company.  Also, if you're competitive by nature, someone who you perceive as better than you falling, brings them closer to where you think you are, maybe even BELOW you.  Which will sometimes give a feeling of superiority that people crave.  You're not a bad person, but if it bothers you, you should find out what makes you feel this way and right it.  In my experience, its more fun to share someone's joy openly, than to silently will them to fail.

  4. i think you have an inferiority complex.

  5. Lack of self-esteem.

SCHADENFREUDE: Enjoyment taken from misfortune of others.

Social Comparison Theory: When people around us have bad luck we look better.  Effects people more with low self-esteem, and men more than women.
