Question:

Why do I lisp when cicadas are buzzing

My daughter Julie sits in her back yard often..the cicadas are buzzing

during the summer months and when she talks while the cicadas are

buzzing or chirping her speech changes ... she starts to lisp..WEIRD, right?

Well, she told me about this and I wondered if there is any reason why

hearing the humming buzz would create a speech defect..as soon as they

stop she is perfectly normal again..

thank you for your time..

  1. I don't think she's faking because I experience the same thing myself and my husband has noticed it too. My theory is that the pitch of my voice must exactly match that of the cicadas so there's a noise-cancelling effect on the 's' sounds.

  3.  This happened to me, too.  Very weird.  I could not stop lisping no matter how hard I tried.
