Question:

Why do I lose internet connection every 12 hours?

A few years ago, I bought my Linksys Wrt54G router in USA. (Wireless router) It worked fine, when one day it suddenly bricked due to a power surge (My guess). I used my desktop mostly instead of my laptops, so I didn't buy a router yet. I finally decided to buy a router last week. All worked fine, (so I thought) but then, I would lose internet connection every 12 hours or so.

It won't say "limited or no connectivity" (for xp) and it'll just show that I'm connected to the network, not the internet (on vista). I either have to reset my router, or go on it's config page, and renew the DHCP. I noticed that everytime I reset my router or renew the DHCP, my external IP address would change. I tried to upload an open-source firmware for my linksys, but I apparently can't, since open-source fw's don't support the V7 Linksys wrt54g.

Could it be a problem with the settings on the router? Or with the isp? Note: If i have a direct connection, from cable modem to PC, I get constant internet.

If you can, add me on yahoo messenger: halo56111 .

Please help me.

Thank you.

  2. I had the same problem once.  We had just gotten internet and needed a router.  Got everything hooked up an running, but it would lose internet.  So I started browsing around (when I was able to connect) and discovered the current firmware for the router wasn't properly programmed.  So I upgraded the firmware, and no more issues.  Sure, it still DCs every now and then, but rarely anymore.  So check to see if your router needs a firmware upgrade.  Otherwise, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

  3. Set the router to reconnect automatically.

Its quite possible that the ISP has a DHCP lease time of 12 hours, to prevent people leaving routers hogging the system.

  4. a. Make sure that you don't have any virus installed in your system.

    b. Make sure that your DHCP server is working fine.

    c. Make sure that no-one is using your wireless connection simultaneously.

    d. Make sure the IP which is assigned to your router is not known to anyone else they can change the setting (if they have the password).

    e. Make sure that you are using a good and strong password.

    f. Make sure you are using a good wireless encryption protocol.

    g. make sure that your wireless card is supporting the encryption protocol which you have setup for your router.

    Hoping it helps.
