Why do I love you all so much?

Okay, that's not the real question. Although I do adore you all.

Here it is.

If a baby was born deaf, blind, and had none of its senses..

Would it have a thought?

Here's a more detailed explanation.

The baby cannot see, hear, taste, feel [touch], or smell. It lives in a bubble and is fed through a tube hooked to its stomach. The baby was born this way.

Does it have a thought?

Please explain why you believe it does/does not have thoughts.

  1. In my opinion, I would "pull the plug." Even though it may have a mind, how can it live life. I know that all of the pro-lifers are now going to "thumbs down" my answer now.

  2. Wow.

I think that it would have a thought, but translating it to others would be impossible

  3. yeah i think it would i am assuming that it lost all it's senses during it's birth, other than them not developing correctly in the womb  thus i believe that it could still have  a train of thought even though it's permanently isolated from the outside world but would be hard to prove and impossible to determine about what the baby is thinking about.

sorry it's so long it just got me thinking

lol i'm stopping my train of thought now!!!

  4. Well lets face it, its because I am amazing.

Ok to the real question. I don't think it would have any formed thoughts, of course it would have the capability to think. But we experience life through our sense. It also wouldn't have a feeling of "self", because we discover ourselves through our senses. But thats just my scientific point of view. Spiritually it might sense the presence of love. I would feel so terrible for a baby like this.

  5. if the condition is congenital. no... sadly thought and emotion are learned traits we develop through our senses, so no. however the child would have neurological activity but it would be strictly automatic organ function. medically the child is alive but unless she/he were my child i don't think i would consider her/him alive.

i could be wrong i'm not that into neurology. cardioligy is more my cup of tea.

  6. All I could really say is that its brain wouldn't develop well without stimulation.

  7. cause everyone needs love

  8. Very thought-provoking question. ;-)

I think it can think since it has a mind but at the same time... how can it think when it's just a newborn and don't even have the senses to experience life to be able to think about things?

    Hmmm...

  9. yeah. the babys senses just arent functioning, but that doesnt mean he or she does not think.

oh and my explanation: his thoughts may not be to detailed, since he cant see what happens or hear what the problem or issue is or whatever is, but his mind can wonder and imagine what it is like and then create thoughts from that.

and you so hate me, admit it lol.

  10. i think that it would have thoughts but the thoughts would be very abstract and the baby probably wouldn't remember many of them. not that babies do anyways.

thats a really good question though. the only reason i guess i can give is that if it was in that position what else would if be doing besides thinking, even if the thoughts weren't necessarily very concrete.

i suppose its a little like asking if a person that was blind from birth has dreams or can think about images. only a whole lot more complicated.

    ^-^

  11. Good question...Actually, I don't believe it will think anything since it doesn't see anything, hasn't ever heard anything, and has never been able to feel anything how can it know what things are. They would basically be brain dead right? The parents probably can't enjoy the baby because it can't talk, make little noises because it can't hear anything. Can't laugh because what is there to laugh about?? The baby has no chance of giving joy back to the parents because it doesn't even recognize who mom and dad are.

Speaking as a mother, though, I would love my child no matter what.
