  1. Because you live here on the Earth like the rest of us. The more you know the safer you are in the long run. You will know not to live in the shadow of a volcano or on a fault or on a flood plain.

  2. It seems like the ideal should be a supercharged student who only learns exactly what is needed for the degree goal he/she has chosen.

Yet, we have found that such an individual tends to be uninteresting and uninterested in anything but his/her chosen field.  In universities it breeds interdepartmental competition.  One faculty group looks down on other disciplines because they don't understand even a modicum of each others advances, importance and needs.

Secondly, a varied education leads to a broader view of how to conduct research.  In the “real” world it gives an appreciation for the rich knowledge man has assembled over the millenniums.

Earth Science?  One of the most amazing stories of our ability to take a confusing pallet of phenomenon and evidence and create a consistence and useful theory.  The results of their research have and will make the lives of billions of people less frightful and more secure.

  3. Also, the more you know, the less easily you are duped by charlatans.

    Like Kent Hovind.

  4. Because your school says so.

  5. So you understand the importance of the island in space called Planet Earth. Very Good explanation David D
