I don't get the point. If I havve health insurance, what's the point in buying uninsured motorist insurance against bodily harm? Seems like I'm paying double for the same thing.

  1. Honestly, I'd say its for the protection of the other guy, if you have a accident... Health insurance isn't quite the same.. or they could just being chargin you to keep your insurance company in business?? Who knows you choose.. good luck either way though..

  2. UIM or underinsured motorist is for pain & suffering & lost wages & loss of daily function (stuff that health insurance does not pay) that happens to you when an at fault driver does not have enough liability insured to cover your injuries.  Your medical insurance is fine but I am sure you have a deductible & copayments.  Medical payments under a motorcycle policy usually does not & should be primary in an accident.

The UIM is totally different than health insurance.  I wouldn't go anywhere without it.  Some states require it, mine does.

  3. If you ride a cycle you NEED the UIM (Under Insured Motorist) coverage, badly. As another poster said your health insurance will pay med bills. However, health insurance won't pay for lost wages or pain and suffering.

You are absolutely NOT paying double for the same thing. Not even close.

UIM coverage comes into play if somebody is at-fault for injuring you, which is a distinct possibility if you ride a cycle. If the at-fault party doesn't have enough coverage (which happens all the time) to cover all your med bills, lost wages & pain/suffering then your UIM can kick in to cover the gap.

Frankly, trying to save money on insurance by dropping the UIM (if that is`even allowed) can come back to haunt you.

    Good Luck
