Question:

Why do I need cable to see local channels?

I live in New York City and to be able to watch regular network channels (NBC, ABC, etc.) I pretty much need to hook up to a cable tv service or it's just way too fuzzy/snowy to watch. I wonder, why is this? Is it because i live in a big city and there is so much interference?

Also, when the government makes the switch to digital signals, will this improve picture quality if you don't have cable? In other words, will you be able to watch network channels without having to subscribe to cable?

I realize I have asked a lot of questions here but thanks for reading.

  1. Digital tv is much more clear than regular analog tv because it's somehow more efficient using the radio spectrum. Today I hooked up my hdtv to a regular rabbit ears antenna that I had since the late 90's and i picked the local channels (abc, nbc,cw11,fox,etc)in  manhattan and also some HD channels. I compared the digital channels with the analog channels and there was a huge difference. The analog channels were really fuzzy, blurry, and black and white while the digital versions of those channels were crystal clear. Digital signals are definitely better and you should get digital converter box. i live in upper Manhattan by the way so there are some tall buildings nearby.

  2. Probably due to all of the interfernce like you said.  Also too many tall buildings.  The switch to digital signal will not have much effect on the reception.  I hope you tried using an antenna if you are allowed to put one up.  It can make a huge difference.
