  1. Remember that you can still use your TV to hold the antenna in its place.  You only need to connect the antenna to the converter box electrically.

  2. because starting next year all your over the air local channels will go digital which means your antenna wont be able to pick them up without the use of a DTV box. anyone with no cable service needs one.

  3. Because digital TV broadcasts get to your home exactly the same way that analog ones do. In North America, the same frequency bands are used and TV antennas treat digital and analog signals in exactly the same way.

It's kind of like UPS delivering a box to you. The truck & driver are the same, but the content of the packages can be entirely different.

In most cases TV stations transmit their analog and digital signals from the same location. However they have to be on different frequencies. Analog channel numbers have always be defined as being on a specific frequency, but the matching digital signals have to be sent out on a different "real" frequency. For example, analog channel 7 always occupies the same 6 MHz frequency band, but digital channel 7.1 has to be on some other 6 MHz band, for example "real" (equivalent to analog)  channel 50.

That's one of the reasons why digital reception may be better or worst than analog.

When a dtv or converter box scans for channels, it checks all possible channels and then remembers the analog channel number  that is associated with each digital transmission.
