Why do I need to give more than basic info of ex-husband to apply for a passport? How do I obtain this info?

I was married all of 4 months, 4 years ago. I do not have a way of contacting my ex to find out his birthplace. Could someone tell me an easy way to find out (preferrably cheap)? It seems like all the info I've given already would be enough to know who it is, why is this necessary?
