  1. Pick the top five things that need to be done today.  Write them down and put them in front of you, esp. if your work space is a fixed one.

Number them in the order they need to get done.  If you want, put an hour deadline next to the first few items.  (i.e. like 11 AM, 1 PM)

Identify ways to minimize your distractions, depending on what they are.  If it's surfing the web or checking your email, write them down as a "to-do" for later...not a treat you give yourself while working.  If it's the phone or co-worker requests, see if you can ignore for a few hours.  Later in the afternoon, you can address those calls or requests at a designated hour, and do them all at once.

  2. If you are uncertain why you procrastinate, make a log of your activities for a week by half-hour intervals. Determine how you’re spending time. It can be a real eye-opener to see how much time we spend on relatively unimportant things between important tasks.

When you do your scheduling, you should plan for intense or concentrated performance for about 90 minutes. Don’t forget to schedule time for preparation of the job. After you’ve actually started the job and have been working for about an hour and a half, you may need to take a short break. If you work in an office, pause, stretch, and reflect. If you work outside, get some refreshment. Reward yourself for your work.
