I play trumpet, and when i'm in a practice room or even if i play really close to a music stand, my tone sounds all airy and nasty.. but when i play in a big hall or outdoors when i march it sounds great! trust me i don't suck..i'm 5th chair honors..

  1. It's the confines of the room and how loud you play.

  2. I think the room is the distraction or maybe you can't concentrate coz of the room but i really think the room is the problem.

  3. I suspect that you are over blowing.  A few of my brass players really have problems with balance.  They have  always been expected to play with power.  I usually have to tone them down as they warm up before rehearsal.

Try working toward a blending tone.
