Why do I start litter training?

I have had 2 baby rats for only a day so we obviously aren't bonded yet but they are checking out everything in the cage, doing some exploring. I was just wondering when I start litter training?

Right now they keep pooping in the one corner so should I move the litter pan to that corner?

  1. You can start at any age. Here is an article about it.

  2. they will p**p in the corner naturally i would move the litter pan to that corner may sound sick  but if u put some of the poo in that pan then they will think theve already been to toilet there

  3. Why start litter training? Because the odor of course! Urine is what makes the cage smell bad, so, if there was a way to clean out the urine everyday, it would reduce the smell.

Yes, indeed move it to that corner. Put a couple of p**p pelets in there, so when your rats check it out, the know what it's for.

If you haven't bought the litter pan yet you can read my tips!:

It comes with the box, a starter kit of litter, and a cute little scooper!

You will need to buy more litter at the beginning.

Change the litter every 2 weeks.

Clean the littter box out everyday, by using the little scooper it comes with. If yours didn't, you can purchase one. Don't dump the litter every day though!

~Hope this helped! I'm currently potty training my little dwarf hamster!

    ~Good luck! :)

  4. yer do that

  5. That's great if both have already chosen the same corner! totally move the litter to that corner, if they p**p or pee anywhere else in the cage clean it up right away and put some in the corner where the litter is. Start doing that now and they should get the impression that that corner is meant for waste, and the rest is for bed and playing. Just re-inforce their natural tendancy to go in one area.
