Why do I still show one unread message in my inbox when there are none?

if it is Gmail for some unknown reason it does this.

it drives me crazy and annoys me.

If you're using Yahoo mail, sometimes you'll get a new e-mail, but it'll be dated from a long time ago.  I'm not sure why.  If you have your e-mail sorted by date, the new e-mail might not show up on the first page.  Scroll back through your e-mails with old dates and you might find it.
