  1. The biggest reason is that the their is no funding for sports in India. Besides cricket and field hockey anyway. If the Indian government or the wealthy people in Indian decide to build places for Indians to play these other sports they may be able to compete.

A lesson the Indian should take from China is that anything can happen.

8 years ago nobody thought they would be as good as they are today. But they spent millions in developing their athletes, and weather you agree in with the way they did, you have to give them credit.

  2. I'm sure they have plenty of potential but without the support of the country, it's hard to get kids to dedicate their life to one sport.  Besides do you really want to be that good.  I mean if you win any event, some country is just going to cry cheat anyway.

  3. Winning medals at olympics requires infrastructure as well as a keen interest in sports. Indians have traditionally been more focused on studies and are known world over for that. The attitudes among the people is changing but only well funded sports like cricket dominate the scene. Hopefully after the commonwealth games 2010 the infrastructure will be in place to train many more athletes for the future. There is a lot of talent in India but sports other than cricket are not considered as a reliable lifetime career choice due to lack of govt. support and corporate sponsorship. Govt. is not keen to setup proper facilities but is quick to shine in reflected glory of individuals. They gave crores to Abhinav Bindra who is the son of an extremely rich man and trained at his private shooting range. This money could have been better invested to help poor athletes. Bindra could have got commercials on his own and made money but what was the need of giving an already filthy rich individual so much public money. It's only so that corrupt politicians can bask in his reflected glory in photo ops!

  4. Because we talk more and work less.Because we criticise more and appreciate less.Because instead of helping and finding the true potentials we believe in back biting ( Monika devi's case). We are partial on account of  states, region, religion, caste etc.We make our ordinary sports persons demi gods which results in talented players not getting a chance when they deserve. These are few reasons for which india has got her first individual gold medal and USA has got her 900 gold medal since 1896.If we can remove all these evils we can also be a great sporting nation. But I doubt that our politician will allow this to happen.

  5. india has one gold medal .let's hope this is the beginning

  6. Ok--Jairam sort of hits on target....but to clarify...

Indians, no doubt, like any other population are athletic. I grew up in the States and even with my short stature (5'6'') I could run the mile in under 5 minutes and I was a varsity soccer player. That being said...many of the indians here like my brother and cousins etc are taller like 5'10 to 6'4'' but they are not encouraged to follow sports, just as I wasn't. I have relatives in India and some are tall and/or athletic but again no one is encouraged to follow sports. Sports are not seen as a way to get ahead in life. They are not seen as being important and thus there is very little infrastructure.

India is not like the U.S. where there's sports all year-- from baseball in the summer, football in the fall-winter, and basketball in winter-spring. Then we also have ice hockey and soccer leagues. And people are always active with jogging, volleyball, playing frisby--anything. Sports are a norm in the U.S.

In India, the people receive heavy advertising from cricket and occasionally tennis. The people are brainwashed by the media there (and here in the U.S. via indian satellite tv channels)  to believe that good indians that are rich and have class and are suppose to be examples to other indians--only send their kids to play "cricket" if they are girls then its tennis.

Its very disturbing actually and it angers me greatly at times.

Indians aren't encouraged by their families to play sports--but rather to study and get a good education. Sports are taught to be seen as trivial means of fun and and entertainment whereas school and education are looked at very seriously.

Having a good careers, having a family, having good morals are viewed very seriously by indians---and for fun, people are taught to watch movies, gossip, or eat--not play sports. Thus the culture puts heavy emphasis on principles (&ethics), money, and hoarding items above all else. In many ways the culture is suppose to make people self-sufficient, productive, and efficient, but it encourages physical laziness because that is shown as the purpose of having wealth.

Over time (and it has already started with last year's release of chak de india) as Indians are getting more and more exposure from immigrants and from moderization...sports will be emphasized more on their psyches and people will start participating in games outside of just cricket. This will seen by the politicians and gvt and thus lead to better infrastructure and people wanting to and being able to practice more often--and devoting more time and effort to athletics.

But all this will take considerable time and effort to change the hypocrisies of indian thinking.

And in the meantime "cricket mongers" in india with their media advertising aren't exactly helping change the situation there as they are perpetuating age old stereotypes.

  7. EXCUSE ME!! just to let you know, we just won a gold medal for shooting! gosh, shut up!!! you are dumb!!

  8. I don't know- do you have good sports facilities in India? You can't create athletes without investing money in modern training facilities.

  9. because Indians are focused on more important and productive things in the sceme of life than jumping and running

  10. That's extremey offensive. I would hardly say that they are "suck" at oympic sports. Think about the religion and culture of the nation. They are such a peaceful people. Maybe it's not that they suck. Maybe they just care about more important things such as spiritual matters and making the world a better place.

  11. I Hope this answers your question:

    1) Nothing can topple the craze of Cricket in India even if theyve won a gold in shooting.

    2) Most Indians would rather study than do sport

    3) The Government doesnt fund or funds very little hence the resources to gyms, swimming pools are all minimal.

    4) Sport is quite discouraged in India.

    5) People just dont have the ambition to take up a sport and excel in it!

    6) 40-50% of Indians are quite poor hence they dont even get a chance to train or be recognised!
