Why do Jamaican and West Indies people have NO problem with cockroaches/bugs?

Mind you, not being racist (I'm white and my girl is spanish), just something I noticed where I live in NYC. We are very clean people and keep the place as clean as we can. From my exp, most west indies and jamaicans have no problems with cockroaches even though they are VERY unhealthy. My landlord is jamaican and when we first came into our apartment we saw some roaches and freaked out at first, he was just all calm like "Ah they're everywhere". One time he walked in on us setting up traps and powder and was kinda bedazzled at first.

Then at my girl's job, she was talking to a jamaican co worker about them. The co worker said she doesnt kill roaches cuz theyre God's creatures. My girl asked what if they were all in your food that you ate, and she said you're being mean. My girl SHOULD have asked what if they laid a colony in their kids ears at night.

I mean how can people NOT take this kind of species seriously? The dust from them can cause asthma in children, they're very dirty, disgusting, and plain out ugly. All our neighbors are jamaican and they're so untidy, leaving the hallway window open, the screen door open, sitting on the hallway steps in the dark and talking on cell phone while roaches are running around the hall.

Once again i'm not being racist here, but you have to admit some habits and opinions are just plain out WRONG when it comes to untidiness and insects, particularly cockroaches.

What is that all about?

  1. lol i'm not jamaican but people who are used to being around poverty have more things to worry about than tiny roaches who they can squash with the tip of their giant shoes.

you're probably not trying to be racist but what you are saying pretty much screams RACISM lol. i take no offense though, seeing that it's not intended.

...its not only Jamaicans. Its any race that lives in an inner city faced with poverty. white, black, african, latino, west-indian. and whosoever!

: ] if u live in a city thats dirty filled with mice, no matter how clean you keep ur house, a mouse is gonna get in there!

  2. native jamaicans are pretty much used to it.

like you, I'm not being racist either.

in jamaica there is a range of poverty, not everybody can afford nice clean homes, or insect free homes.

although some do, in general there is alot of bugs in jamaica.

most jamaicans have grown used to the bugs, and have gotten used to the health concerns/bugs. although they may not like it, there isn't a whole lot that they can do about it.

i agree though that there should be more cleanliness but it's not their fault, its how jamaica is and that's how they were raised of have been living for a while.
