Why do Japanese maple leaves turn from red to green and get burnt around the edges?

I have a Japanese Maple that was planted about 6 or 7 years ago by the previous home owner. It is in my front yard and gets full sun. I live in Sacramento, CA so it often gets to 100 or above. Starting this year, the leaves started out red and fuller than ever. Since late June, the leaves are starting to get burnt around the edges and are turning from red to green so now the tree is a mix. It hasn't rained in about 3 months, but I do water it at least twice daily. Does anyone know why this is happening?
