  1. All 3 use turbo`s . What do you think Kompessor means on a german BMW? American cars use both , but tend to use turbos on production vehicles. But remember the Buick Grand National, Supercharged ,3.8 v6. as well as the Thunderbird SC which also used a v6. Limited production , but still a production vehicle. Maybe the j**s need the extra boost because they produce lower hp vehicles in stock form for the North American market. And what about the Nissan Skyline , with twin turbo`s. That will dust most k***t Krapp. Go buy a German car then. Can`t wait until you need repairs and see what they cost just for a tune up. Like CS7 said , there seems to bee a lot of German cars that need a turbo just to get across the intersection , let alone go at highway speeds. The TDI`s are a good example. Great fuel economy , but lacking in power. Just like a moped, also from Europe. LOL!

  2. Because Germans are just great engineers, always have been... nuff said.

  3. you know, i really have no idea. but from my experience, turbo chargers rock the socks off everything else, so i think everyone should just use turbos.

  4. "the Germans use neither.?" - what about Porsche 911 Turbo, supercharged Mercedes Kompressor, Audi S4 Turbo, VW Golf Gti Turbo etc etc

"Americans use superchargers" - what about Chevy Cobalt SS Turbo, Pontiac Solstice Turbo, Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo etc etc

"Japanese use turbos" - what about Mazda Millenia s/c, Subaru 2.5RS s/c, Toyota Corrolla Compressor etc

  5. Actually, Mercedes uses Superchagers and turbochargers, VW uses turbochagers (and have used superchargers- the corrado comes to mind), Audi uses turbochargers, Porsche uses turbochargers and BMW uses turbochargers. Also, if you want a good example of how sadly mistaken you are, look at the 335i. It's a 3.0 liter twin turbo in line 6 engine rated at 300 horsepower. Compare that to an Infiniti G37 with 330 horsepower without boost. Actually the 335i isn't anything impressive. Remember the 1990-96 300ZX twin turbo? Twin turbo 3.0 liter V6 that was rated at 300 hp. Also it was a V6, not an I6 like the BMW. The I6 is easier to get power out of so the 335i should've been able to dish out more. I'd still rather drive a Japanese or American car rather than try to show off in an electrical system nightmare like any European car. Also in response to Talons comments, do you know a 4 cylinder engine that you can buy that puts out 240 hp without boost? I can. It's called the Honda S2000. How about 200 hp? Honda Civic Si or Acura's TSX and RSX Type S. Not much in terms of torque but what do you expect from the only company in the world that is heavily into their racing program? Every Honda car uses a fuel system derived from the Honda Formula 1 cars.

  6. German cars do use them both.

    Japanese use both.

    Americans use both,

    Here are examples of each.

    German:

    2001 Audi S4 was a twin turbo V6.

VW GTI uses a turbocharged engine.

Audi A4 4 cylinder is turbocharged.

Mercedes AMG or sports models are always supercharged.

BMW uses a twin turbo engine in the BMW 335i.

    Audi RS6 is twin turbo.

New Audi RS5 will be turbocharged.

VW Passat 4 cylibder is turbocharged.

    American:

    Pontiac Solctic GXP is turbocharged.

    Saturn Sky Redline is turbocharged.

    Mustang GT500's are supercharged.

Some older American cars are suprcharged.

    Japanese:

Lots of their sports cars use turbochargers, but there are some supercharged ones. None that they make right now.

In Mercedes, "Kompressor" means it is supercharged.

When you see engine sizes on car like 1.8T, the "T" stands for Turbo.
