Why do Japenese train cars pack so much?

I saw a video on Myspace with them pushing them in and I got a sick feeling of how it would feel to be squished to the glass on the door with your saliva on the window.

It is their primary means of transpo---and you may be surprised because it is never late even for 5 seconds!! That is why people have to hurry to get in, because it arrives and leaves at the exact time. My husband was late for a train ride for just 30 seconds and all he saw was dust, lol....
