  1. This question was funny the first 4,387 times, but it's getting old now.  It was an old joke by George Carlin, but it's 'way old and now it sounds stupid.

The pilots of the Empire of Japan did not wear helmets.  They wore a tight-fitting fleece-lined leather cap with a lower band that covered their necks and ears.  The purpose was strictly to keep them warm in the loosely enclosed cockpits of the Japanese airplanes.

The uniform was very important to Japanese warriors, and the Kamikaze pilots were issued the same uniform as all other pilots, for morale reasons.

Only squadron leaders had radios in their airplanes, so the idea that they were for radio headphones is not correct.  The other members of the squadron followed hand signals.

  2. This question has been asked and answered more times than I can count.  It's right up there with why drive on a parkway and park in a driveway.  The answer is it wasn't a helmet in the traditional sense.  It was more of a cover to keep the head warm with a couple of earphones sewn into the ear flaps.  It really did nothing to protect the head.  More for insulation and communication.

  3. Possibly for wind shield in the most unlikely events, like the destruction of the windshield... hehehe... ;D

  4. Small planes with their engines running at redline +20% flying through explosive rich disrupted air at low altitudes give a whole new meaning to "turbulence".

Can you imagine facing your ancestors and telling them "Sorry, I missed. I knocked myself unconscious on the control column when that flack took a chunk out my tail"?

One would have to die all over again to expunge the shame.

  5. Just to look cool and pickup chicks. I think the correct is "did", not do. I think they're all "retired" now.

  6. WOW! What an original question. I think I've only seen one like this 4,682 times.

It's not a helmet. It's a fleece lined cap with headphones.

  7. Splash obviously hasn't bothered to look at any pictures showing kamikaze pilot helmets.  --Or ANY pilot helmets from

WWII.  She thinks they wore crash helmets!

  8. This question gets asked every week.

    Communication headphones are in helmet.

  9. Because they were bald and wanted to look good for the sailors they were going to kill.  Thanks for the points hahahahahaha

  10. Radios were built into helmets. There was a need to maintain radio contact until the pilot was at his objective.

  11. I suppose they never thought about it. They were experienced pilots so it was probably natural for them to wear helmets.

Also they were looking for a glorious death so i suppose they did not want to bang their head on the cockpit if there was turbulence and stun themselves and crash.

After all they wanted to kill as many of the enemy as possible and if wearing a helmet helped their chances then they would have worn one.

They knew they were going to die anyway, but I am sure that each and every one of them wanted to take out as many of their enemies as they could before that happened.
