I've been a dancer for a long time, and now I have this summer session teacher who's beyond hard. She's accused me of not wanting to learn and all this other c**p, so I really want to prover her wrong. I asked her what one thing was that I desperately needed to work on was, and she said my leaps (grande allegro and things like that). I've been trying really hard, but I can't seen to get my legs to split in the air (even though I have my right and left leg splits down, but not center). So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, tell me how I can get my legs to split, and also jump higher!

  1. Gotta exercise to make your leg back tummy strong and you've also gotta have good momentum. Practice all of that.

  2. A major part of executing leaps is having the confidence that you will stick your landing. It helps to jump higher because it gives you more time to get your legs back underneath for landing. Try small leaps first to get confidence before committing to large leaps.

Of course you need flexibility and should stretch daily to get and keep it. To jump higher, you need good technique, but also strength. A plie before the leap helps. Make sure your toes are pointed to the ground when you leap. Leaps use fast twitch muscle. Build up your leg strength by running sprints, preferably uphill. The higher your strength to weight ratio, the higher you will jump. Lose any excess weight up top. It also helps to jump in front of a mirror to get feedback. I place a chair in the field of view and do sets of 20 making sure that each leap is above the back of the chair. This is about half of my maximum leap, set your own target at about half maximum.

  3. use your plie and your thighs to get higher.

as for splits just stretch everyday until you got them.

  4. Do lots of squats and side leg lifts

  5. Show ambition and ask her.

  6. plie is key to height.

stretch and do the splits on the ground first. the splits in the air will come eventually after that. Right now...just work on your height.
