I can think of so many North American examples: SuperSonics to Oklahoma City, Houston Oilers becoming the Tennessee Titans, Montreal Expos becoming the Washington Nationals, and the Hartford Whalers becoming the Carolina Hurricanes. These are just a few examples. I can't think of any European examples. Why doesn't it happen in Europe as often?

  1. I don't know about Europe sports but aren't they country-based? It is different moving a team to a different country than just moving it across the country.

  2. I think it is the almighty dollar.

  3. because Europe has small countries, and US is almost as big as Europe.  In Europe each country has their main teams play in the big cities.  US has a lot of major cities, and also money problems.  In US = Power.

And also countries in Europe don't have hundreds of professional teams.

  4. $

  5. Greed, and many Americans don't care if the owners are spineless, they support them anyway because they are spineless themselves.

  6. Smaller countries/fewer cities to move to, and also many teams (i.e. Soccer/Football) have really strong ties and fan bases (look at just about any team in the Premiership), so why would they?

At the same time, in the U.S., there are many cities and only so many teams to spread through each, so it's common to see teams move or see leagues expand.
