  1. Because the closest dollar amount bid without going over is always the winner, and if the other 3 people bid over the amount and you bid $1, you win.


  2. Sometimes they bid 2 dollars or 38 dollars or something to be a smart *** but 1 dollar just means that they think the other 3 have over bid so 1 dollar is a symbolic gesture to guarantee their win.

  3. Because they think everyone over bet. 1 would be a safe #.

  4. People only bid $1 when they think everyone else has over bid.
