Why do Republicans jump on Edwards cheating but give a free pass to McCain's cheating past?

McCain cheated on his first wife while she was a handicapped woman. Yet the Republicans berate Edwards due to his wife's illness.

I still can't get over how pissed I am at Edwards.  I would have voted for him if he was the Democratic candidate.  As a matter of fact, I was hoping he would be.  Now, I can't even stand to look at him.

Same thing.  But he(McCain) hadn't been living with his wife for 5 1/2 years before he did it.  And McCain wasn't running for President when he did it.  Edwards is STILL LYING!!!  He says he's not the babies daddy- I say B.S.  He has paid off Ms. Hunter to not take the DNA test & paid her off with campaign funds.  He should go to prison!

The premis of your question suggests that Republicans are bashing Edwards for this while the Democrats are defending him.  If that were really the case wouldn't he be attending the Democratic National Convention?  Wouldn't he still be considered a VP candidate?

The Republicans and Democrats are more unified on this issue than your question suggests.   Both sides are appaled by Edward's behavior. Both sides have long known about the circumstances of McCain's first marriage, and are NOT very offended.

Now, if you really want to know why virtually everyone has problem with Edward's behavior, but NOT McCain's ... focus on the differences between the two marriage rifts (not the very few similarities).

We have to trust our politicians and Edwards lied about, it then came clean a little bit but is still lying and has broken laws and used the publics money to support this woman and hide his secret. The cheating isn't nearly as big a deal as the lying and using other peopl'es money to support his s*x life. I can get girls and I'm broke so Edwards shouldnt need to pay for it.

McCain cheated 30 years ago and admitted to it.

Edwards cheated two years ago and lied about it. He ran for president with his wife by his side. He ran for president on his honor and integrity all the time he was lying.

Americans can forgive marital infidelity. They can't forgive liars and hypocrites.

His actions have hurt the democrat party this election year. Obama and Hillary supporters should be PO'ed instead of rushing to his defense.

If the dems condemned Edwards instead of making excuses they may get more respect.
