This is phenominal and I can't understand it. Why do this birds congregate here in mass numbers and no where else? Why only at dusk. It is really bizarre.

  1. The rainbow lorrikeets out Chermside way congregate at the shopping centre out there at dusk and early evening for food.

These birds often seek water in the morning and evenings too.

These birds are not considered migratory birds so it's not like geese flying north or south for summer or winter (sorry Bill M)

  2. Is it all the time or certain times of the year? If it's certain times of the year, they're probably migrating.

  3. I have to agree with the previous answer.  Rainbow lorikeets often roost overnight in the same trees and they seem to like palm trees.  Christmas before last I was at Emu Park (near Yeppoon / Rochhampton) and the r. lorikeets roosted in palm trees outside the motel.  Big noise just before sunset.

Last Christmas, same place but the palm trees outside the motel were out of fashion that time, they were roosting elsewhere.  Looks like herd behaviour.

  4. Are you sure they're rosellas?  I used to live in Maroochydore and around dawn and dusk it was lorikeets and wow, what a racket!!  I've never seen rosellas in Brisbane.  I don't know why they do it.
