And why do they have to do one season per DVD? Can't they just put all the seasons/episodes in one?

  1. to make more money i guess

  2. They have to get the rights to the tv show and sometimes that takes some time.  They need to make sure everyone involved gets paid.

  3. TV shows are made by corporations (production companies) owned by the producers.  Many times, when they sell the air rights of a show to a network, the network has rights to the show for a period (typically 5 years).  This is so the network does not end up competing against reruns of the show on other channels or DVD.

When the original run agreements expire, typically the production company would syndicate the reruns (that's why you see CSI all over the place now).  When these agreements expire, then they try the DVD route.  That's also one reason they release a season at a time. (The rights to the first season have expired, season two expires next year, etc.).

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
