Why do Twilight fans get so offended when...?

You start to read the books. I just recently finished Twilight, because I heard how amazing it was. I am engulfed by the stories, but when ever I bring the book somewhere, all I hear is, "Oh, I read that back in '05," and "It's really annoying how EVERYONE is reading Twilight!" I mean seriously, no one cares if you read it first, it's still a best seller. It's competing with Harry Potter. Of course it's going to get some attention. So what if was delayed by three years, I'm reading Twilight, and I don't care how much of a hypocrite I may be.

  1. "It's competing with Harry Potter".

Have you been living under a rock?

I burst out laughing when I read that.

Twilight has sold 12 million copies.

There is one movie, and it's unlikely they will film any but the first after the reviews of Breaking Dawn.

And the only people who like Twilight are pansy boys, insecure teenage girls, or women with unfulfilled s*x lives (just kidding. But you get what I mean. Twilight appeals to a limited group of people).

Breaking Dawn sold 1.3 million copies its first day out.

Harry Potter has sold 400 million copies.

There is an ENTIRE theme park for Harry Potter at--where is it?-- Universal Studios? I can't remember.

They have 5 movies out, and eventually will have 8.

The HP series has a universal appeal. Children, adults, seniors, boys, girls-- people from every group have read the series.

HP7 sold around 12 million copies its first day out.

Sorry. Twilight isn't "competing with Harry Potter". Twilight is nowhere NEAR the level of Harry Potter, not when Harry Potter has sold 386 million more books than Twilight has.

It IS really annoying that Twilight has become this huge craze. It's like when you hear a song you really really like, but no one else has heard it. Then all the sudden it becomes a hit on the radio and it's on CONSTANTLY (Hey There Delilah, for instance). When that happens, it ruins the song for me. Every other question on this board has something to do with Twilight, and it's annoying. If something is insanely popular, it will get on some people's nerves.

Twilight's popularity is sad to me. It shows that people would rather read something that has no value than something with literary merit. Twilight's popularity is to me a sign of our society's general intellectual laziness. It's sad that something like Twilight is so popular when there are other books out there that are so much more meaningful.

On the other hand, why does it matter that some people are saying you're not a "real fan"? Just read the book.

  2. Uhhh, offended? That's weird. Never experienced that. We're living in a strange age. What I'm annoyed at is that when I express an opinion I get attacked and get insults heaped on me, which, yes, I'm a dork - hurts some.

  3. Hey, good for you, reading it!!!  :)  I'm always glad to hear about someone who is enjoying them, no matter when they started them.  ...I wish some of my friends would read them.

  4. Because they think it's becoming just another fad and they think they're the only "true" fans since they read it before it was a best seller.  I think that people get really stupid about that.

  5. so what dude, im just starting to read it too.

    i agree with Mira S.

  6. No , you are wrong.

Twilight isn't competing with Harry Potter , not in a million years.

Harry Potter sold much more copies than Twilight , so that's totally not true when you say that these two books are competition , that's ridiculous.

Stephenie Meyer is nothing compared to J.K.Rowling , who is a talented woman , and because of her talent , today she's the most richest author.

Where's Stephenie M. in whole this?

J.K.Rowling built this whole new universe , where it takes great talent and imagination , to create.

You have to consider, that it takes great wit and ingenuity to create the Harry Potter's world , in the way that J.K.R. succeeded to make.

Twilight is just a tweeny , teenage , romantic drama , with too many Mary Sue characters. There's no plot. It's all abot Edward and Bella and their whole "love" thing.

Which I don't find it as a love at all.

    xx Greetings

  7. Read what you want and just ignore people

  8. Because, everyone likes to think that they're unique, and original, and better than everyone else. Just look at them and say, "And I'm reading it now. What a coincidence"

  9. I remember I started reading Twilight because no one would shut up about it. Almost all of the sites I visit, everyone had to post some sort of Twilight thread or topic. Because of the hype, I just decided I'd read it.

As a result of this, I tried reading it. I stopped half-way through because it just didn't do anything for me. I applaud Stephanie Meyer for trying the whole "writing thing", but there were just a lot of things I really disliked about her tone, characters (I personally thought Bella was a Mary-Sue), and style. I have nothing against the people that like the series, it just wasn't my type of novel.

  10. my friend always says i alreadyt that book likle a year ago cuz shes like on the 4th book. she always makes it seem like shes cooler just cuz she read the book before me..wich is pathetic since it is a popular book and probaly tons of people read it after her...and to answer your question its because they(as in my friend) may think people are..copy cats X] and i choose twilight over harry potter.

  11. I know what you mean.I didn't start reading the series until like 3 months ago because people kept shoving them in my face and telling me to read them. They were good in the end so I'm glad I did but still it's like god shut-up, I'm reading them now.and a good rant is totally worth the point loss.LOL.

  12. Ha ha! I feel like the exact same way!!! Don't worry you're not alone. This is a conversation i had with my friend:

    Me: oh, im reading twilight.

friend: psh. i read that like in 1 hour. how can u still be reading it?

    Me; hypocrite.

people are very weird these days........

    well bye bye

  13. I understand where you're coming from. I am a major Twilight fan, and I actually didn't start reading the series until 3 weeks before New Moon cam out. Personally, who cares who started reading it first? You're reading the books, and that's great. People want to say that they are the only real fans of Twilight because they read it when it first came out, and when they did that, no one even knew who Stephenie Meyer was. I say read the books and enjoy them every bit as much as I do. If people say something like that towards you again, say, "I heard the book was great, and I plan to find out for myself. Also, now that I'm reading it, I suppose you can no longer consider yourself the only Twilight fan."

  14. hey it's ok i didn't hear about twilight till the beginning of this year. don't get upset about it just tell people that you were out of the loop, don't worry i was out of the loop too. and i'm re-reading twilight so yeah i think a lot of people are either reading twilight or re-reading twilight. but i have a friend who is just now reading the twilight saga.

  15. I had not heard of any of the series until the hype about Breaking Dawn being released.  It piqued my interest and I started reading.  It was an interesting take on the Vampire story.  I liked it but it was not a HP by any means.  It is sweet and clean and easy to read.  It was very predictable.  I hope the movie does well.  Enjoy your books.
