And in the present, we should use what in it's place.  Do you have a replacement we can all put in our gas tanks tomorrow?  If not, we need to use oil.

Well environmentalism is an issue, but it's not the primary one for me.  

I'm more concerned about the US dependence on oil for essential things, like its military, coupled with the simultaneous (and profligate) use of oil for frivolous luxuries, like millions upon millions of commuters traveling fifty or eighty miles a day to office jobs, in vehicles designed for hauling farm equipment.

Unnecessary use of oil should be curtailed, because we need it for more important things.  

Commuters, certainly, should be weaned away from gas powered vehicles entirely, as far as possible.  Electric vehicles are already good enough for the purpose of most of them.  

There is a concerted effort by industry to drive oil demand ever higher though.  That's how they're making their money after all.  

But they're doing the country grave disservice.  Anyone who cares about America should oppose this gluttony.

If you didn't...would you be able to run your computer. How about driving to work,the mall or school. How about flying or boating. Everything you use or do in life has something to do with oil. Food,clothing,housing,money,eating,even Birth Control...ever use a condom or lubricating jelly!?  You just can't get away from it...and for those who say the ride a bicycle...how about those tires or how the frame was made from mined raw ore and smelted then driven to the shop. Fools errand to try to get around it! Tagger.

d**n, i must be really spoiled, but i like having a vehicle to travel to my job, and having electricity in my house and workplace.  Oil makes that affordable, until we can come up with another affordable alternative. When you run out of cheap energy sources civilization is in dire danger of a complete collapse and chaos, and another dark age is stirring, just around the corner. And what will you do when your computer screen goes blank?

I'm surpized at how selfish the slaves can be.  Name 1 place better than earth!  What heaven?  As if we deserve heaven for killing earth.  (Besides, heaven is for the living, not the dead.)  This is a beautiful place, and from what I've seen so far, I'd much rather see man perish, than this beautiful planet. (MAN IS A LIAR!)  Do you realize how much wasted heat we produce as we darken our world to scramble to and fro in despiration.  Computers, condoms, birth control, malls, work, are you serious?  There was food, clothing, housing, money (which is fake), & eating before oil.  All of our KNOWN universe has One earth, and millions of idiots living for an afterlife.

Without oil, tractors don't run and land doesn't get fertilized and pesticides aren't made.  In other words, we don't make nearly enough food to feed 6 billion people.  We also won't have the ability to transport food and other goods.  Modern civilization is built on oil and it's going to take decades to ween ourselves off of it.  While anarcho- primitivists would prefer we just collapse modern society, let the majority starve to death, and start over in hunter- gatherer groups, I'd prefer we look for alternatives for oil over the next fifty years and continue on with the human race.  We may still need to use petroleum for some processes but if it's a small fraction that would be acceptible.

Note that this may not be a choice.  There's only so much oil to suck out of the earth and we're running against the clock in terms of being able to pump out as much as we are.
