Why do UK residents put 'xx' at the end of every sentence?

It seems like most of them put 'x*x' or something at the end of each sentence. What does that stand for?!

Awkward, I put kisses at the end of everything. For example in texts, or on facebook, or even letters. All my friends do too :) and personally I'd consider it rude not to get any in return... xx
