Why do White Sox fans look at the Cubs as their rivals, but the Cubs fans look at Cards and Brewers as rivals?

The Cubs and White Sox don't play in the same league and only see each other 6 games a year. That's hardly a rivalry and outside of Chicago it means nothing to anyone. For some reason White Sox fans look at the Cubs as their biggest rival, but Cubs fans know that their biggest rival is the teams they face in their division, the Brewers and Cardinals being our biggest division rivals. Why is this do you think?

  1. Because CUBS Fans have a grasp on reality and the White Sox Fans were part of glue sniffing revolution?

    LOL!

Heck, I don't know. However; it's good for a Team and their fans to realize whom is in their league and division so they know whom they have to beat to get into the playoffs.

You think we should send the White Sox Fans our 'Guide for Understanding Major League Baseball"? Or, should we just leave them chasing their tails?

  2. trust me....livin in chicago....there is a LOT of rivaly!!! yes, they are in diffrent leagues, but its more about who is the better chicago baseball team. (aka white sox!)

  3. they think of stl. and brewers as bigger rivals cause they are in the nl. if the sox were in the nl they would play them more therefore they would be accepted as rivals. same as the yanks and mets

  4. Hm, I know Cubs fans who look at the White Sox as a rival and in some cases, fans who see them as the biggest rival. There are White Sox fans who can't stand the Cubs but the White Sox don't have a rivalry like the Cubs-Cards or Dodgers-Giants. They have some good history with the Tigers, Indians, Royals and Twins however.

  5. Eh, it's complicated. First off, both teams see the others as a rival because the city sees the teams as rivals. It's like early new york teams, you were either a yankee, a dodger, or a giant. Same with Chicago, add the fact both are some of the earliest teams (and as of Sept 2005 hadn't collectively won the series since 1917).

But the White Sox see it more as a rivalry simply because they don't really have a historic rivalry in the AL. The Cubs and the Cards are rivals because of the proximity of their cities and the overall challenge the 2 have had over the years. The ChiSox can't say that about any team in the Al as much.

  6. Maybe because the White Sox have a smaller fan base so they are trying to get publicity by declaring a rivlary on the bigger fanbase? I have no idea. I am sure the Cubs see them as a rivalry too.

  7. Well, I am from the Chicago area, and plenty of Cubs fans take the Sox-Cubs rivalry as the biggest. But so do some White Sox fans. I personally think of the whole AL Central (besides the Royals) as being the WHite Sox biggest rivals. This year, it is especially the Tigers and the Twins that I am saying are the WHite Sox biggest rivals.

So I think this is a big accusation to make that all White Sox fans consider this, when you never made the point that some Cubs fans look at it that way too.

Plus, Milwaukee and St. Louis are closer to Chicago than many of the AL Central teams. Detroit, Minneapolis, KC, and Cleveland are I think farther than St. Louis and Milwaukee from Chi-town.

  8. I have no idea. I am sure the Cubs view the White Sox as a rival too.
