  1. Well, I don't really understand your question.  I have two pets, and I don't have a lot of money, and I don't have a large bank account, but if my pets need help I will do whatever I can to get it for them.  That's called responsibility.  My pets have regular vet checkups, heartworm, and flea & tick preventatives, as well as nutritional dogfood.

  2. because a **** load of people have no idea what it really means to be poor.

  3. Because they assume you're not so irresponsible that you would get a pet without having the money to care for it....

A good way to take care of your pet medically and not worry about unexpected large pet bills is to get health insurance for your pet.

  4. You don't have to have a big bank account to have your pets properly vetted, you just have to be smart with the money you do have, treat problems before they are big problems, and only get as many pets as you can afford to have vetted..

I live just above the poverty line and manage to keep all my pets appropriately vetted and obtain emergency treatment as needed..

Having pets is a privilege, not a right. Providing medical care for pets is mandatory in most areas. That's something that should've been kept in mind before getting a pet.

If you can't afford medical care for a pet, then get a pet that won't need medical care. Tarantulas don't go to the vet, neither do other insect type pets.. But, a cat that gets sick needs to go to the vet. If you want a pet and won't pay for a vet, don't get a dog, cat, rabbit..etc..

  5. this is because a pet needs alot of ongoing care, especially when it is sick or one of its parts are not functioning as it should. so when its sick u gotta give it 2 vet.

  6. When you adopt a pet, you are committing to getting it the necessary medical care.

  7. Many dogs live for 12 to 18 years.  This is a BIG commitment, very much like having a child.  You are responsible for their care, including medical for all of those years.  There are several studies that show the thousands of dollars it will cost over the lifetime of owning a pet to feed them, buy their supplies and get their annual medical care.

And this does not include any extraordinary medical costs if your pet has a serious illness or injury.  Just like people, anything can happen.  They can break a leg, develop diseases, get infections from bacteria or viruses and eat things that make them sick.

And guess who has to get them the necessary medical care?  That's right - YOU, the owner.  They are not disposable commodities that you can discard when something goes wrong with them.  You have to take care of their issues, to the best of your ability to do so.

My dog has just been diagnosed with encephalitis.  This is a serious disease, but she is getting better with treatment and her prognosis is good.  It is not a situation where I could just say, well, "she got this disease, so I will just put her down".  She is otherwise very healthy and can live for many more years.  So my only responsible choice was to seek treatment for her.  Which costs money.  I wish it wasn't the case, but it is what it is.  And it is part of the "price" of owning a pet.

Buying a pet is like buying a car or a house.  Getting it is the cheapest part.  Maintaining it is where you spend the "big bucks".  So don't get a pet if you can't afford to "maintain" it for 12 to 18 years.  They don't have a choice - you do!

  8. I totally aggree!  I don't take my animals to the vet unless neccessary, and even then I have to be careful the vet isn't jacking up prices, or ordering tests they don't need.  I think the truth is if you know what you're doing, you DONT need to go to the vet that often.  I buy all my medications online, except for when I absolutely need a prescription.  I think people take their animals to the vet too often and I get amusement out of how much money they spend to find their animal has something like an eye infection when I would only spend $12 at Agway for medicine.  They think it makes them better owners or something!

  9. I don't want to put my biz out there but let me tell you poor or not is no excuse not to take care of your pet..you took on that reponsibility..I know what it is like to be poor..My animals do not suffer for it..Nor should they if you are to poor to own a pet then you need to find it a good home or send it to a shelter..some animals are better off dead than the way they have to live...And many illnesses cannot be home medicated they need a vet!  And a big bank account is not needed put back say 3 dollars a week work extra go walk someones dog or shovel snow or something. Thats a check up a year and shots to  prevent some of these diseases!

  10. because when you adopt a pet , you're taking on the obligation of making sure it's cared for . that includes medical attention when needed . don't adopt pets if you're not financially prepared to provide them what they need . that's not fair to them , and completely selfish on your part . don't own animals if you  can't afford to take care of them .

  11. Technically they think you should be able to afford everything for your pet, becuase it is like medical for your family. (for example: you would not let your child go without shots, medicine, check ups. And a lot of people think their pet is like their child)

However with everything the way it is, it isn't always possible to afford over priced vets.

There are some reasonable priced vets who offer shot clinics to save office fees and there are low cost rabies clinics that come around every so often. I am sure if you needed anything like that you could search online.

  12. Well, I don't know anyone who thinks like that. But if you have a pet, you should be able to take care of it properly, which may include the vet...

  13. Too bad they don't have the same high standards for people with children.......

  14. you should!

to help the poor pet if it gets sick.

what if you dont? then you are giving the pet a death sentence

  15. because alot of people care for there pets almost as much as humans and they want to do everything they can do to help them
