Why do adaptations of organisms to inter specific competition not represent character dispalcement?

Sometimes they do.  But, in order to be character displacement, members of the species involved have to be more similar to each other in traits when they are not cohabitating than when they are.  If the two species just evolve adaptations to ameliorate competition and these adaptations are present in all populations of the species, that is not considered character displacement.
