  1. You must be referring to winglets. They are aerodynamic modifications intended to convert some of the wing tip vortices energy loss into an apparent thrust.

  2. they thought it helped the dynamics. but it doesnt. no real reason because its the camber that gives lift

  3. Winglets increase the effective wingspan without increasing the actual span.  They are a design feature that saves fuel and makes the wing more efficient.  Southwest has added them to most of their fleet, and saved a lot of fuel.

  4. The wing edges are tilted up to reduce the quantity of high pressure air from below the wing spilling over to the low pressure area above the wing. This intermixing of air leads to formation of wingtip vortices which make the airflow over the wing turbulent and thus cause a loss of lift and increase in drag. The curving of the edges is just one of the ways of reducing wingtip vortices. Other ways include winglets, wing fences and wingtip tanks. The idea is to make it harder for the air to spill over by presenting it a longer path.

  5. the purpose of this tilt is to reduce the induced drag which is very strong in low speed flight like in an approach.

  6. Some do some don't, both fly, just the design I suppose.

  7. Wow, some people have NO clue when they answer! Jeez! the wing tips youre referring to are for Fuel savings. They save an average of 7% fuel per year. They also give better lift which helps the aircraft fly with less power needed, which in turn saves gas! HOPE THIS HELPS.

  8. So that they can fly.

  9. So many answers what I remember in our A340 Ground Engineer's Initial Course is that they reduce if not prevent wing tip flutterings.

  10. Short & sweet: It increases airflow, reduces fuel costs, its decreases the stall speed by 2kts & lastly of course it provides lift.....and it makes the aircraft look pretty cool too!

  11. They are called winglets and are installed to help reduce fuel burn in Aircraft.
