Why do algae contain pigments other that just chlorophyll?

There are red tides caused by algae blooms. There is also a brown tide caused by algae.

Different pigments allow for the utilization of different wavelengths for photosynthesis.

sometimes algae adjust their pigments to the environment, i.e. to the wavelengths they encounter.
