Question:

Why do all antivirus packages block my internet connection?

I have a problem where every antivirus I install appears to block my internet connection.

I have tried: Avast, ESET NOD32, Bit Defender and Kaspersky.

I know its the antivirus software as I can connect once I've uninstalled each antivirus packages (seperately). Also when a package is installed and I have dissabled the protection I am able to surf the web again. As soon as the protection is enabled the problem happens again. This is true for all of these packages.

I have investigated the settings in each package and tried to specficy Firefox as a trusted piece of software that is allowed internet access. This didn't help.

I used to use AVG before they stopped updating the free version. AVG never caused any problems. I run a Windows Vista machine and use Firefox 3. Internet Explorer has the same problem. Other applications that use the internet to check servers also have the problem (EAC CD ripper for example).

Please help! I'm desperate. I have been without virus proctection for too long and cannot work out what it going on.

  1. Anti Virus Programs will not block access to the internet.

    Only a firewall will.

If you have a third partyy fire wall - uninstall it.

From what you are saying I would strongly suspect you have a very nasty virus on your computer and that is what isblockingg you.

Use a program called Process Explorer to see all the process's running on your computer and you may be able to determine which one is causing the problem.

Another thing you can try is go to MSCONG and UNtick everything in the start up tab and on the services tab - Hide all Microsoft services and untic everything else.  This will keep programs from starting when the computer starts.

Start > RUN > type MSCONFIG in the text box and click ok.

  2. i am using avast my self and i had used nd32 ,avg before avg and  Kaspersky do ask when an appliction try to connect  to internet but avast never ask same as nod32 i think are u using many antivirus at the same time? this could create problem some times if you dont ,then this could be your isp problem or from my experience some time malware can also effect  the network i think you should check if your pc is inected with malware if it don't then contact your isp

  3. Most of the trial version of antivirus block your internet connection and hoping you to contact their technical support number and upgrade the product to full version for a fee.
