  1. I never noticed that.

  2. They don't.

  3. What you're hearing is likely due to the Optimod (used at most AM and some FM stations) doing what's known as "de-essing." That's where the machine removes high-pitched sibilants (such as S sounds) so as not to have the sound going into the red.  It's more noticeable with higher, louder voices, whether male or female.  It shouldn't remove that much, though---something to talk to a chief engineer about in that case.

As for me, I've never lisped on air--even after burning my tongue on hot coffee.  I did have to change a setting or two in Sound Forge when I recorded something for the next day so that de-essing didn't happen.

  4. What?  Check your tuner, then hold the antenna while standing on one foot with your right arm raised to exactly NNE.  Does that help?  I figured you must be in the hills of KY if ALL the chicks you hear lisp . . . .

  5. I'm a female announcer & I definitely don't lisp.  Where is this coming from?

  6. A lot of that is the audio processing the radio station uses that tends make the higher frequencies, like womens voices sound sibilant or smeared. Notice you don't hear it on Jazz or Classical stations, which aren't as heavily processed.

  7. Who do ALL yahoo answerers make broad generalizations and stereotypes?

  8. Because lisps are s**y

  9. I don't believe you're serious, but if you are - I think you're mistaken.

HOWEVER, it never fails to astound me the number of people with speech defects and impedimants who are on the air - mostly in small markets. Maybe there's a speech pathology method that encourages people with that particular disability to seek out a job in radio to try to help overcome the disability?

That might make sense and certaily wouldn't hurt the station if the market's small enough, the indivifual is assigned the proper time slot and the disability not so severe as to make the jock unintelligible.
