they have to go as fast as they can to get the injured person to hospital in time.seconds count.

Uh... because of 2 reasons. 1, they may have a person IN the ambulance that is very sick or near to death or 2, they need to rush TO someone that is very sick or near to death. Sorry but thats a silly question as well.

im not sure you are meant to be keeping up with them, maybe thats why they drive so fast, they think you are following them.

You are not suppose to try and keep up with ambulances. For 1 that is very dangerous. and for 2 if a cop sees you doing that you will get a nice ticket. Ambulances driver faster when they have more critical patients in the back. They are trained drivers for emergency driving.
