  4. To distinguish it from gridiron football.  The origins of American football are linked to rugby, also called football, where the hands are also used more often than the feet in terms of controlling possession of a game ball.  

    According to the etymology dictionary, "soccer" was slang from the late 19th Century as an abbreviation for "assoc." as in Football Association (as they could hardly have taken the first three letters!).

  8. I don't know why we don't call soccer football, but you should really check out our version of football. The players in our game actually get hit and fall to the ground, no flopping necessary
