Why do americans named their sport football ???

My arguments ...

1- their sport is played over 95 % of the time with hands

2- when football was invented the soccer had already 85 years of existance (the links are from english wikipedia for soccer : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_National_Football_League_Championship )

3- when is organised the world championship of football ??? lol

LOL, I live here in the states and have asked that question myself!! Dunno I guess the same reason someone came up with the name for apartments why?? they are not apart they are together?? It is a mystery!!

Well, we were going to name it, "Greedy, low-life, overpaid, arrogant, drug-addicted, animal abusing, ethically challenged ball", but the name isn't very catchy.

In US and A the american use foot to kick ball.

But in my country...Australia! we have better sport...AFL mate.

How about why is NRL called football, when its clearly rugby?

AFL, NRL, NFL, Soccer and many more sports are called Football in their "native" country...why...who knows

sorry, but soccer is played with a soccer ball. American football, Australian football and rugby are played with a football. Get an oval ball and maybe you could have football. Notice in question two, you called your pansy game soccer????? See, you defeated your own question, waste of five points. The world championship of American Football is the Super Bowl. Get over it. If soccer was played to win, not tie, because defeating and humiliating your opponents is not gentlemanly, then you might have a game. Soccer is too boring. Make the field smaller so the kick to kick in the midfield would be gone, wasting of time, no attempt to score. Eliminate off side. A loafing back man can get an off side every time if he goofs off and lets the forward get by him. Too many pansy, wimpy, non-tough rules in soccer, put some pads on and play a real man's sport.

I know this may get some thumbs down, but soccer players just are too wimpy.

Actually handball was not already taken. Handball was developed AFTER American football. I think it is because we Americans are complete idiots and have no idea about the real world. I want to live in a country that does not call football soccer! I like the real football as much as you no. Hey wait a minute! As an Australian, shouldn't you like Aussie rules?
