In some countries, especially those with low life expectancies, women in their 20s are seen as being old because by the time they reach that age, they have already lived at least half of their lives and could die sometime in the next 10 to 20 years. I think in the case of some Arab countries, there is another reason for that. A young girl is more likely to be a virgin than an older woman and virginity is highly prized in those cultures. Most men won't marry women who are not virgins.
