  1. In addition to Lithium's answer, expansion/contraction of the wood structure is more likely to happen in a place that gets warm during the day, so that would favor the attic (and obviously the basement is concrete anyway). The expansion/contraction can create repeated knocks that some people attribute to ghost activity.

  2. I've never seen this question on here before . Maybe you asked it in another section. I usually see all the questions that come through this section. Maybe it was a long time ago.

That thing with attics....That's a good question. Why DO they hang out in attics..when other ghosts are all over the houses.??? I've always been more afraid of attics and closets than basements. As a child I was afraid of them. Wonder why! We didn't talk about ghosts at all that I can remember. Maybe it was in a movie. Wish I had an answer. I'm giving you a star so maybe others will come and answer for both of us.

  3. Attic contains more things from the past stored in them, you are in them less frequently, expansion from heat and cold, most have fans that allow air circulation(breezes and access to rodents), and most electrical lines are run through attics and dropped down the wall. All these lead to the feeling of being haunted.

Usually in the basement you are there for activities be it laundry or entertainment. That is why you don't notice the eeriness of the basement,.

I do not believe there is an actual study that says one place is haunted more than another. I will do some more research an edit if I find anything.

    Nope nothing I could find...

well I have no idea, they may like the attic.

  5. People tend to store items that belonged to relatives like a grandmother or some family patriarch. Since it is thought that spirits tend to hang around familiar places and their prized possessions in life, we place so much attachment and time and energy into these things this could be the reason it seems that spirits would haunt an attic.

Keeping grandpa's military keepsakes in a trunk or grandma's favorite full length mirror usually can cause a haunting. Once the attic is emptied of those items the spirit may actually stay because there is less traffic in that area and they are left alone in relative peace.

You tend not to keep keepsakes in the basement because it's damp and there is the possibility things will get ruined - can happen in the attic if the roof leaks though.

  6. I think they hide.  At least for a while they are a bit stand offish.  A lot of times if you are investigating a property a d nothing has happened in the areas that the activity generally happens in,  if you can go to an attic space or a basement  area, you will normally get some evps or good photos in those areas.

  7. I really haven't seen a huge difference.

Most places I have been to it actually has been the opposite, where more activity has been noticed in the basement.

  8. Fantasy answer:

Ghosts are less dense than air, so they rise to the top.

    Real answer:

Since all paranormal activity is imagined, the question should be "why do people get scared more often in attics than in basements?", and the answer is, of course, that they visit their basements more frequently than their attics.  Familiarity tends to counteract fear.

  9. This is not a strict rule, but most of the time.Attics are for ghosts, spirits and bats.Basements are for Maniacs, demons and rats.

  10. It only seems that way.  Some believe that a non family member spirit or a negative spirit will hide in an attic or a basement used for storage because those places are usually dark, and not much human traffic.

  11. Honestly I do not think this statement is entirely true. Perhaps more activity occurs in the attic. In my experience the attic is where mice like to go, and scurry around, and birds and bats tend to get into attics and make noise. Also, attics often are made out of wood which shifts and creaks with the wind and changing temperatures. I believe this could create a lot more reports of paranormal activity in attics where natural causes are actually the cause.

Basements on the other hand are sheltered from the wind and dont shift and creak. They are often damp, dark and cold and unfriendly to rodents and other small woodland creatures. It is more probably that basement activity could be caused be paranormal causes, however, since there is less noise coming from the basement, less people would report activity from there.

A friend of mine who is a paranormal investigator in southern new hampshire told me that about 90% of cases he is called in on are not paranormal in nature. So what we have a very large number of reports for attics, but probably an equal number of actual activity.
