Why do bacteria prefer glucose over sucrose?

  1. Glucose is a simple sugar....a mono-saccharide.  It is easier for the bacteria to break it down to use for an energy source.  Sucrose is a di-saccharide, it is made up of one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose.  It takes an enzymatic reaction to break apart the sucrose into usable forms of energy.  


  2. Glucose does not need digestion.

  3. Glucose molecules are simpler than sucrose molecules!

  4. Glucose is a far simpler in its molecular structure and therefore is far easier to use within the body compared to more complex sugar molecules such as Sucrose. This is why bacteria will "prefer" it but still use both in most cases.

    Some bacteria may be unable to digest more complex sugar molecules
