Since they have a covering, it seems like they'd be protected and last longer but they go brown so fast. why

  1. fruits like everything else have their own time table.  with bananas

it is very short.  that is just the nature of the beast and sometimes

we humans have to adjust our expectations to reality.

i am sure that at some point scientists will develop a banana with

a longer shelf life.  of course doing so will be at the cost of some

of the bananas best qualities, with flavor being usually the first to

    go.

even scientists can't win them all.

  2. You should keep them seperate from other foods, that's what causes them to go off quicker.

  3. It is true. To keep them fresh longer hang in a cool place but don't keep in  refrigerator.

  4. In the heat they go bad even faster so always buy them green and within 1-2 days they will be ripe!

  5. I don't find that bananas ripen particularly fast especially in the winter, if you want to slow down their ripening time make sure they are not enclosed in a bag but are exposed to the air. Also buy less and at a greener stage.

I find the best tasting bananas are the ones that just begin to have brown spots. If bananas get over ripe and can't be used it is possible to freeze them and use them later.

On the other hand it is possible to speed up ripening if desired by enclosing them in a bag with an apple which releases ethylene gas that has the ability to promote ripening.
