Why do batters step out of the batters box between pitches and pull the velcro strap on the batting gloves?

Is it a superstion or a nervous habit or are they actually tightening the wrist strap on the gloves? I find it hard to believe the wrist straps would loosen every single time on all batters.Sometimes they don't even take a swing and they step out and pull the wrist straps and re-fasten them.

It's supersitious  and players do it for luck just as pitchers avoid the foul line before going into the dugout.

it's to disrupt the rhythm of the pitcher who usually pitch better when they work at a fast pace,  also to step back and think about the situation and what pitch might come next and they also might have to look to the coach for signs

It's just a habit. A lot of players don't like to change their routines at all. Whenever I'm up to bat I do the same thing between each pitch.

Some people have their own way of dealing with things like stress or they have strange habits. Sometimes though, you realize once you've stepped in that your gloves may be too tight, or maybe after taking a couple swings they've loosened up a little. You want to make the gloves feel like nothing so you don't concentrate on how tight or loose those are and you can just swing.

Haa Haa, I remember Nomar taking like 30 seconds after each swing to fiddle with his straps, I think for most of them it's a habit, kinda like how Papi always tightens them, then spits in his hands and claps them together.

Nomar Garciaparra has been made famous for doing that. I guess it's just habit, not nervous habit.
