Why do bees build there nest close to the ground?

can anybody tell me the myth of why bees build there nest close to the ground? and why do they build them high sometimes? the last 3 bees nest we found this year were like a foot off the ground, but in the past we have seen them way up high...

  1. i've studied bees in university!

    bees find spots which seem to them more suitable!

    there is no myth to the snow level expected this year!

    an explorer bee looks for a good spot!

    then wen it finds one it goes back to the swarm and a unanimous decision is made to mvoe to the new spot!

The way I understand the myth is it has to do with the next winters snow fall amount.  If the nest is high expect a lot of snow if it is low a milder winter.  This may work in the North where snow is expected but in the South were snow seldom falls I can't see where this is an option.  Maybe it just has to do with the mildness of a winter the closer to the ground it is.  Hope this helped.
