Why do birds heads move backwards & and foreward when they walk?

  4. Balance.  When one leg moves forward, that shifts the center of gravity a bit.  To counteract that shift and keep the center of gravity inside the bird, the head moves.

  10. I looked it up and the web site said because their body weight is all centered toward the back of their body, the head moves forward to compensate for the weight, so I guess it's a balance issue.
