My parakeet Bella tucks up her foot when she sleeps. I've noticed other birds do this too. I was just wondering why they do it?

  1. i think to rest one part of their brain or something ?

  2. It's to relax the leg/foot. Sometimes it helps keep it warm as well.

Most pet birds have a limited amount of places to perch as they sleep. If you provide perches of varying sizes and shapes it helps to keep the birds feet from becoming sore (think about it- would like to be forced to stand on something hard all day?). Many birds if given the chance will actually lay down in a safe spot, most bird owners don't think about this though. Pet birds like to use the sleep huts, wild birds use nests or wide branches close to the trunk of a tree when they want to fully relax.

  3. to balance

  4. to rest the one leg. instincts. if you notice your bird sleeping with both legs down it's a very good sign it's not well. very good rule of thumb to go by. i have gotten my birds into a vet the sec i see it and it's abled me to get them treatment sooner. of course one of my birds has one leg so he sleeps in a nest sometimes. lol.....they sleep on one leg when they are happy well and content too. you bird is well & happy!

  5. they do this so they can rest each foot without laying down.

  6. All birds do this, and , most of the time, it is a sign of a healthy, content, and sleepy or relaxed bird. I have a parrot who does the same thing. I beleive I read somewhere that they do it to keep their feet warm (notice how they get it good and tucked under the feathers) and will switch feet every so often. I happen to believe it's also a relaxing habit for them when they are getting settled in for the night or ready to take a nap. Whatever the case, I think it's adorable.

  7. to keep warm
