It's harder to keep your eyes closed while you are awake...blind or not.

Maybe it's more comfortable? Try keeping your eyes cclosed 24/7 and see if they wont just open and blink

Blindness is internal, it has nothing to do with the eyelids. They could open their eyes for the rest of their life, but the blindness come from within the eye.

You never know, things could turn around and if their eyes are closed...how would they know?

well, why would they close them? having them open is more convenient, unless your sleeping.
