Why do boys have to wear speedos on middle school swim teams?

I've always wondered this. The honest truth please.

I'm a swimmer so I know. Its because if you wear something that is tight on your skin it creates less drag so you go faster. Boys in middle school are really competitive so they wear those to beat each other and they think it looks hot meaning they want to get some girls also.

Typically middle school is when people start really competing on swimteam, prior to that it's more learning and fun and is not as competitive. Speedo's are worn to reduce drag in the water. The typical swim trunks have a lot of extra material, the more material, the more drag therefore the slower you go in the water. What a lot of boys or girls do is wear several swimsuits during practice to make themselves have more drag so it's harder to swim and then during competition only wear the speedo so they have less drag and can swim faster.

the smaller and tighter the suit, the less drag in the water, hence a faster time.  Same reason ski racers wear those tight gs suits

There is competition you know. Those swimsuits are also not there for nothing. The speedos are so tight against your skin that some will morph just for your skin shape. Middle school is just preparing for high school swim team where it starts to get serious. And also, it is true that swimming naked would be better, but guys are bassically wearing nothing because its like their skins. Yet if they were swimming naked.....at least one guys ladder would extend. =0

Because clothing causes drag. No clothes at all would be ideal, but I dont think parents or anyone for that matter would appreciate that.

Did you watch the US Swim tryout and not then look up the nine world records they broke in Omaha Nebraksa and part of the records breaking was those speedos.

Because they are more aerodynamic than swim trunks, and thus allow them to swim faster.
